For the past 16 years, the Stadium at South Field has been the playing field to BYU’s seven club national championship teams as well as the Cougars home since the 2003 transition to the Premier Development Leauge.
Located just south of the Smith Fieldhouse, the Stadium at South Field boasts one of the most well-maintained grass playing surfaces in America. Because of its quality field, the U.S. men’s national soccer ceam chose BYU as its practice field in preparation for its 2005 World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica. The match was held at Rice Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake. The Wasatch Mountains serve as a scenic backdrop for the capacity crowd of 3,800 fans. South Stadium is also equipped with state-of-the-art field lights, making night games a favorite among fans.
BYU men’s soccer is home to some of the nation’s top soccer facilities. These include great athletic training facilities, a team room, and an academic center that provides all of the educational needs for the student-athlete to succeed academically. In March 2008, renovations began to build a permanent grandstand of 20 rows that accommodates seating for 2,140 seats. New lights were installed, creating double the existing light on the field to accommodate the yearly national television broadcasts on BYU Television.
Few universities have a fan base as loyal, dedicated and as die-hard as BYU. Cougar fans are some of the greatest fans on earth. Considered one of the toughest places for opponents to play in PDL soccer, BYU defeated 2009 Northwest Division Champion, Hollywood Hitmen 1-0 in Provo last year as well as tied 2-2 PDL champ, Ventura County Fusion at home.
