Part 2
PROVO, Utah (Feb. 3, 2010) -- In conjunction with NCAA men’s soccer signing day the BYU men’s soccer team added 13 players to its 2010 Premier Development League roster.
“I am really excited to bring in such a great recruiting class,” said head coach, Chris Watkins. “Coach Sackett, our recruiting coordinator, has done a great job of identifying and securing this group. To be competitive in our league it is increasingly important to bring in the very best student athletes we can attract. I expect this group to be a big part of an exciting future for BYU soccer.”
“A lot of times with incoming freshman we’ll have one or two that can step right in and play,” said assistant coach, Chad Sackett. “With this class, they’ll all push for spots to play. That returning missionary group was an awesome class and those guys actually got minutes as freshman before their missions. A lot of guys will push the starters for minutes.”
Most of the freshman signees will join the team the day after they graduate from high school. The Cougars welcome two transfers and return five missionaries who played prior to their two year missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
“There is a lot of pressure on these guys because the players we return are very good so they have high expectations,” said Watkins. “These guys can jump in and help us. They need to help us. We need to get the most out of them. They need to contribute.”
The Cougars hope to add a few more players at open tryouts February 25-27. See http://www.byusoccer.com/tryouts.php for more information.
