BYU Prepares For a Cat Fight with Weber State

PROVO, Utah (Oct. 14, 2009) – BYU (1-1) is preparing to wrap up the fall exhibition season by hosting the Weber State Wildcats (8-0-2) on Friday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Stadium at South Field. — The BYU men’s soccer team continued their fall exhibition season with a loss to a physical Real Salt Lake team, 4-1.

“Weber State will give our young players a major challenge,” said Head Coach Chris Watkins. “Their great pace and physical play will be just what our team needs to see.”

“I think we really need to come together as a team,” said Senior Defender, KC Whitworth. “We have a lot of individual talent. We need to piece it all together.”

The Cougars will continue practicing until winter tryouts in February, then prepare with full force for the Premiere Development League season in May. BYU has played two exhibition matches this fall. September 25th the Cougars beat Utah State 2-0. BYU also lost to Real Salt Lake 4-1 on October 2nd. Both games were in Provo.

Weber State and BYU used to meet often when the Cougars were a club team before joining the PDL in 2003. BYU won seven national championships while playing at that level. Weber State is in the middle of their fall season.

Next Game-BYU Alumni in Action
The BYU Alumni team will play Friday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m. against Utah Valley. The Alumni will also play each other on Saturday, October 24 at Noon.

Premiere Development League
The Cougars joined the Premiere Development League in 2003. BYU is the first and only university to sponsor a soccer program in the PDL. The league is consider higher than NCAA soccer in the US soccer pyramid. BYU won the Northwest division championship in 2007. The Cougars currently compete in the Southwest Division. Their regular season is May-July.
