BYU BEATS UTAH STATE WITH TWO LATE GOALS

PROVO, Utah (Sept. 25, 2009) – BYU started the fall exhibition season on the right foot with a 2-0 victory over Utah State Friday night.
“I thought we kept the ball really well,” said Head Coach, Chris Watkins. “The movement was really good. The young guys looked ambitious. I was actually quite proud of the way we played in general. Finishing left a little bit to be desired but it was a good game. We created a lot of good shots and we really looked smart.”
Freshman, Nils Lofgren scored the game winner in the 81st minute off a well-timed pass by Senior, Drew VanWagenen.
“In the first half I thought he (Lofgren) looked a little bit nervous but once he got that shot off he felt pretty good,” said Watkins. “Hopefully he brings that confidence into next week.”
“It as a lot of fun out there,” said Lofgren. “A ball came across, Drew slid a little farther, and I got lucky and put it in the corner. We kept pounding and pounding and eventually something had to go in.”
The Cougars added a penalty kick in the 88th minute when Lofgren was fouled and Senior, Brit Osborne put the penalty in the back of the net. “I’m not the best PK taker,” said Osborne. “I haven’t converted the last three I’ve tried. I was pretty nervous. Luckily the keeper went the wrong way.”
BYU controlled possession for most of the game and out shot the Aggies, 25-6. Utah State could never sustain any offensive momentum, relying on counter attacks and vertical balls for six shots, two of which were on frame.
Since the game was an exhibition there was unlimited subbing as they combined for 33 substitutions throughout the 90 minutes.
In the Cougars starting 11 was just one returning starter and seven freshmen. “I hope to not do it again,” Watkins said. “Actually it’s not something that we’re proud of. Unfortunately our seniors, a couple of them have practice right up until class and they were late to practice. That shouldn’t happen. If they’re late, we have a team policy.”
