Provo, UT (July 18, 2009) - Despite the demise of their playoff chances in last week’s loss against the Orange County Blue Star, the BYU men’s soccer team rebounded last night with a strong 3-0 victory against the Bakersfield Brigade and put their season record at 7-5-3.
BYU’s first goal came in minute 42 as midfielder Curtis Graham dribbled wide past Bakersfield defenders and crossed the ball to forward Steve Fellows, who finished it off with a header into the net. The Cougars hoped to score once again before halftime, but their best shot ricocheted off the post as the first half ended.
The Cougars went quickly on the offensive as the second half began, and at minute 51 midfielder Richie Bindrup shot a ball into the net from 28 yards out for the team’s second goal. Not long after, forward Brady Marshall capitalized on a through ball from midfielder Jordan Cushman and slid past the Bakersfield goalkeeper to solidify BYU’s 3-0 win.
“We were clearly much more offensive-minded tonight,” head coach Chris Watkins recalled. “We were able to create more opportunities and have people in better positions than we’ve done in the last few games.”
Creating offensive opportunities has been a long-standing goal of the Cougars this season, whose failure to do so in several previous games was their downfall and ended this season’s playoff hopes. According to Watkins, this finally came together last night and hopefully continues in tonight’s final game.
“Tonight’s senior night, so we’re hoping to send our seniors out on a good note,” Watkins concluded. “Our guys have played hard this year, we’ve worked hard to win, and I’m sure we’ll do the same tonight.”
