La Mirada, Ca (June 26, 2009) — Thursday’s 3-3 tie against the Southern California Seahorses marked the latest in a series of disappointing draws for the Cougars, whose aggressive on-the-road performance has been admirable but not enough to put them on top of their division.

The matchup saw the Seahorses initiating the scoring with a penalty kick goal off just three minutes into the match. BYU countered with a penalty goal of its own, as forward Zack DeFrancis sent the ball sailing past the So Cal goalkeeper in the game’s 22nd minute.

The Cougars sent another one into the net in minute 38 after a clearance punt by goalkeeper Bryan Black was flicked forward by DeFrancis and finished off by prolific scorer Steve Fellows. The team’s third and final goal was perhaps their most exciting--after a shot by Fellows ricocheted off of a Seahorse defender, BYU midfielder Jordan Cushman launched a rocket shot from 20 yards out that bent into the corner of the goal.

However, the Cougars were unable to make their lead last. The Seahorses scored two last-minute goals in minutes 78 and 86, once more on a penalty kick and another on a breakaway that the BYU defense was unable to stop.

“We want to win and it’s very disappointing that we didn’t,” BYU head coach Chris Watkins. “But our road performance is as good as it’s ever been. We don’t yet have results but it’s a tough division and we’re making progress.”
