KC Whitworth
Provo, UT (June 13, 2009) — A rematch proved to be just what the Cougars needed as they shut out the Ogden Outlaws 1 - 0, during tonight’s game after Tuesday’s wrenching 0-1 loss, despite missing their head coach for family reasons.
“We were able to score on set plays tonight, and not be scored on during set plays,” assistant coach Chad Sackett noted. “That was really key. This game really wasn’t all that different from the last one except in that regard.”
The team was determined not to repeat its mistake from the last Ogden matchup, during which the Outlaws scored the winning goal against BYU in the last two minutes of extended time.
The Cougars were able to put the ball in the net when defender KC Whitworth headed a ball off of a corner kick to set up a shot for forward Brady Marshall, who rocketed the ball past the Ogden goalkeeper in the game’s 52nd minute.
Keeping possession of the ball and preventing the opposing team from getting past the defense were BYU’s goals for the rematch. Whitworth in particular made it his goal to defend the backfield at all costs, in retaliation for his misstep last game which caused an Ogden offender to score the game-winning goal.
"KC was beaten last game but absolutely made up for it tonight,” Sackett added. “We have gotten a lot smarter and it’s going to show in the rest of our games.”
The Cougars next play the Southern California Seahorses in La Mirada, Calif. on June 25th
