The Cougars will look to veteran players, like senior Richie Bindrup, to lead them through a competitive season.
Provo, UT (March 4, 2009)
— Shortly before midnight Saturday, the BYU men’s soccer program released the player roster for the upcoming season, following an exhausting three-day tryout that saw the biggest turnout of hopefuls in the team’s history.
Out of the 96 who attended tryouts, 12 were added to the team’s 25-player lineup. New players to the team include juniors Josh Patino and Mateus Costa, and freshmen Richard Harrison, Brian Hale, Bryson Pope, Jordan Layton, Trevor Henderson, Tim Fitt, Nils Lofgren, Pedro Vasconcelos, Matt Rider, and Jake Petersen. In addition to veteran players from last year, sophomores Cameron Lamb, Brady Marshall, and Jeremy Glauser return to the team after serving LDS missions.
While most players on the team hail from Utah or its surrounding states, freshman Jordan Layton travelled all the way from Alabama to be able to play for the BYU men’s soccer squad.
“My last two years of club soccer were really focused on being recruited for BYU,” Layton says. “I worked as hard as I could, but knew coach wouldn't be able to see me play very often so I tried to show everything I had in the two weeks of BYU soccer camps that I attended this past July.”
Despite the large turnout and the caliber of players that made the team, the coaching staff recognizes the disappointment that many feel at falling short of making the cut.
“It’s a bittersweet relationship,” assistant coach Clay Christenson says. “We see interest, we see fantastic players, but the bitter, unfortunate reality is we have to cut to the very best players and leave out some guys we know well.”
With tryouts behind them, the Cougars can now turn the focus to their season, which officially begins with an away game on May 9 against the Lancaster (Calif.) Rattlers. The team is looking forward to a very successful season given the caliber of their new and returning players.
“There’s depth on this team,” Watkins concluded. “We’re extremely fortunate to have a team with real quality players and extensive experience. We have the potential to be the best men’s soccer team BYU has ever had.”
